My First NFT Poem

'What you don’t see'
 
You think I’m always happy, you see me smile
It’s just the same old me
But today I cried for the hundredth time
And that’s what you don’t see.
 
I’m the class clown
The life of a party
You will always get a joke outta me
But the truth is I feel like I’m the joke
And that’s what you don’t see.
 
Most of the time I can socialise like anyone else
And I can come across as care free           
But last night I danced with a thousand worries
And that’s what you don’t see.
 
I try to open up
I get told ‘positivity is the key’
But I’m locked inside my mind, a detainee
And that’s what you don’t see. 
 
I put on a fake smile, fake laughter
A fake me
But what’s inside is an aching loneliness
And guess what...That’s what you don’t see
So try to look harder next time
When you sit and talk to me
Be a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen
Be a Mate
Be a Brother
Be a Sister
Be a Father

Reykjavik's Hallgrimskirkja is a building of extreme graphic power, one that I always found most inspiring in a gothic, dark and moody way. To me, if there ever were a building with a Gothic soul, that would be this.

Composing a shot is an art. Composing a building with such a powerful character as this requires extreme care, both as far as the organisation of the elements in the frame goes, and as far as making them work seamlessly with the weather conditions, the light and the sky.

Besides the challenges posed by the building, you need to take into account the groundwork facing the building. Beautifully laid down, the groundwork is graphically very strong in its own right, and its lines and corners need to be placed perfectly in the frame, down to the tiniest detail.

The smallest imprecision in the composition would ruin the shot, and with it the mood, for me. It would kill the Gothic soul of the building.

On a cloudy day when the coverage and wind looked just perfect, I went to work. The wind was strong, the cold of this December evening hard to endure, but the conditions were perfect to help me create those radiating clouds looking like they were emanating from the back of the building.

I carefully placed the lines of the square's floor so that they would lead up to the building; waited for the perfect time of day when the mixed daylight and ambient light would best express the dark, gothic mood I was after; finally, I chose an exposure of 5 minutes, to make all people in the square disappear and let the Gothic soul of the building take over the square and the frame.

Though strange and unsettling, the forms remain familiar and beautiful. Light finds the bodies in the dark while holding the viewer at arm’s length, as if seen through a veil.

After flying from Toronto to Paris as a team, we drove into the city to take the cast and crew of my brother’s film, Antiviral, to Costume National to pick up their black tie wardrobes. I got to watch my brother and his lead actor, Caleb Landry Jones, put on beautiful, tailored tuxedos in preparation for their premiere. Caleb tried on a pair of sparkly silver shoes and immediately started to dance. He wore them to the premiere.

As a crew we tromped purposefully down the road on our way to the theatre for the very first screening of Cosmopolis. I was nervous even though I wasn’t in the film. As I was trying to navigate wearing heels while shooting, and I looked over at Sarah, and she shot me this look like, “I’m ready.” I still get emotional when I look at this photo because she simultaneously radiated the power and confidence that I admire so much in her, and put me at ease with one glance.

Oh my dear, how far you have come, and how much you have left to go! "Further Than Far" is truly a special piece to us and one of the ones that speak to us the most in our entire portfolio.  The concept of "Further Than Far" is a play on words for when people say "look how far you have come!" or "this person is going to go far in life." In reality, you have come further than far, since you have lived your life up to this point. You have overcome countless obstacles, broken countless barriers, and dealt with countless hardships. We don't give ourselves enough grace for surviving up until this point. It may not seem like we have accomplished much, but surviving to this point, the moment that you are reading this description is to be celebrated. You have truly come so far and dealt with so much. And in your future life? You have the potential to go further than you ever expected. The future is the one thing that offers limitless possibilities. That offers you the chance to go "Further Than Far," beyond your wildest expectations. 

This image was taken at a tree tunnel in Italy that is over a mile long. The cloaked figure, representing you on your journey in life, is neither near nor far, but mid-range in the image. You can see that she has traveled a long way as there is a great bit of path behind her, but you can see how much further she may go, as you look off into the distance behind her. She has come "Further Than Far" but she still has great potential that lies ahead of her in the great beyond, ahead on the road to life. 

This image was shot with a 70-400mm lens which allowed the compression for the trees that you see here. The best part? The trees look like real-life broccoli ;)  So take a moment. Look at this image. And be easy on yourself. You are amazing, worthy, and loved. And you have come further than far. <3

Like A River

A lone extraterrestrial figure from the an unknown world. I wonder; are they emitting an aura or some kind transmission signal into the ether? Maybe they are in the process of being teleported through a portal. 
Are they all powerful? All knowing? Are they fragile? Do they experience love? Is there even awareness of their surroundings?

In the Land of Dreams, anything is possible. 
Who do you think they are?


“Land of Dreams” is a series of images aiming to transport the viewer to a magical land of make believe.
I set out to create this collection after my first visit to this incredible location & seeing the unique colors of the terrain and feeling like I was on another planet. I wanted the images to feel as unreal to the viewer as it felt to me. 

I returned on 3 separate occasions, hiking solo up the steep cinder cone in the dark in order to have the appropriate light for what I needed. On each occasion I had the unique pleasure of complete solitude while I worked.
With the unusual aesthetic & the lengths it took to capture & create it, this is truly my favorite body of work so far.

The location is not disclosed because in the ‘Land of Dreams” the where is irrelevant.

Witness the beauty of impermanence. A moment of early morning light that barely penetrated the dark valley of Multnomah Falls. The light illuminated the mist, and heavy rain obscured the top of the falls from sight. In this moment, the water seemed to fall from an unimaginable height, straight from this misty oblivion.

This valley, obscured by shadows and fog, creates a sense of the unknown as we cannot fully comprehend what is just beyond our sight, a mysterious and beautiful moment of ineffability. A light beam illuminates part of the bridge, inviting us to journey onwards.

Shot in the winter of 2020, and carefully edited to further instill the ineffable experience.

Ineffable Falls

As landscape photographers, we all strive to improve, to make each image our best. We spend many hours in the field perfecting our craft, looking for that mythical / virtually unobtainable perfect composition. I've been patiently waiting to photograph this beautiful Oak Tree in the spring mist. I finally got the conditions I craved to create my vision.

Here I used a Full-Spectrum converted camera and a 590nm filter. This filter covers the electromagnetic spectrum from infrared to near-ultraviolet, wavelengths longer than visible light. It is therefore invisible to the human eye.

For the most part my approach to nature photography is based in literal representation. Even if the resulting photograph would take on more of an abstract form due to isolation and omission of the surrounding environment, the experience of photographing it and developing a relationship with it is always based in reality and a sense of photographing a specific THING whether it be a play of light, a unique moment in time, or an interesting subject. It still is and always will be because at the base of everything, that's the primary way that I interact with and experience nature.

This explorational series comes from a different emotional and mental place. These photos were taken not with the intent of that literal representation mentioned above but from a more visceral place, based more in an emotional reaction to what and where I'm photographing and putting pieces of the experience together into a single frame.They’re the result of a need to bring more fun and less pressure into my work. Honestly, it's hard to describe. But when I photograph in this way, I have noticed a distinct shift in the way that I am interpreting the environment, both mentally and emotionally, and that carries over into the way that I process the photo. Everything about making these photos feels... freeing.

I feel this approach calling to me more and more often lately. Photography has always been my antidote to the demons in my life and I’ve been busy battling a lot of them recently. By letting myself tap into a more relaxed and experimental approach I am able to push the boundaries on how I interact with the landscape, appreciating it for more than its literal inherent beauty and diving deeper into the things that make it special. It allows me to become more in touch with what ELSE nature is and what else it can be, further strengthening my relationship with it.

Another distinction between these images and the images in my other galleries is that often I'm not even sure how I made them. Sure I know which techniques I used, but in the process of taking the photograph I am blending different types of photos with different settings in-camera and not paying attention to the specific process. I'm mixing and matching and switching and experimenting. In my usual interactions with nature I am extremely cognizant of every decision that is being made: which settings I'm using, why I'm using those settings, the composition, and more. There is INTENT behind every single decision and I make them consciously despite the subconscious emotional connection and love with the subject that I’m photographing. These images are a departure from that conscious decision making.

All of these images are single frames made in camera using one or more creative camera techniques. I've purposefully left out any description of the techniques, the literal subject (though many of the subjects and techniques are easily identified), and the context in an effort to not cloud the emotional response to the images with preconceived attachments. If you find these images interesting or if they elicit emotions within you, I invite you to explore them, spend some time with them, and create your own journey.

A Place to Be

This is the text that I wrote in 2014 to accompany this image:

I've been fighting a lot of personal battles lately. Though I ALWAYS try to be optimistic, hope, dream, and give it my all, sometimes I let it get the best of me and negativity becomes a more dominant trait. People who know me well know that I absolutely CANNOT continue to feed that energy or succumb to  it. The consequences for myself and those around me are pretty grave. I've done a lot of work to steer away from that direction but the pull is still very real.

My relationship with nature is very personal to me. It's profound and hard to convey. When I can finally let my worries and negative energy slip away, even for a couple of minutes, I am overcome with emotions to the point of tears. Goosebumps cover my body. It's a moment of warmth coursing through me that I don't get every time I go out, but when it happens I KNOW that I am in the right spot in life. That feeling is what living should be about.

I've avoided Ramona Falls for over 10 years. I tend to avoid the popular hikes, especially in the summer. However, the summer is pretty much only when you CAN hike this trail. What I learned about this trail is that it's popular for very good reason. The trail gains elevation so gradually that it felt like walking on flat ground. Ramona Creek gently meanders and cascades along the trail through a literal carpet of moss and ferns. The sunlight poured through the trees from a cloudless sky, diffusing into warm golden light. The temperature was perfect.  

It's hard to not photograph the creek. Part of my relationship with nature is that I must literally FEEL it. I get into it. No waders, no waterproof socks, no tiptoeing on rocks. I enjoy feeling the glacial waters permeate my clothing and chilling my skin. I enjoy the process of becoming so immersed in the elements that I become one with them. That is when I can get into my creative process. I become balanced. My heart is open. My soul is at ease.

When I stepped out of the creek and realized that my shooting partners had continued on ahead, I was hit with my moment. Here I was alone, for the most part, in a fairytale setting. I stepped into a ray of sunlight and closed my eyes. For five minutes I stood there and absorbed. I tapped into every sense I could and LIVED that moment. The sound of the water, the smell of the forest, the warmth hitting my face, the cool wetness of my clothing, and the bright sun piercing through my closed eyes. I let it overtake.. overwhelm. I opened my eyes and looked around. I was content. Instead of rushing from one place to the next like I normally do in my life I slowly walked on. I shuffled my feet through the pine needles, looked more intimately at my surroundings, and thought 'THIS is what life is'.

To me, there's no faster therapy than the nature that surrounds me. I'm so incredibly grateful that I live somewhere with such easy access to diverse natural settings. I'm working towards surrounding myself with nature on a more constant basis so that I can live more balanced. That road will be a hard one full of uncertainty and sacrifice... but I have hope that the view at the end is nothing short of amazing.

I walk alone

A ripple in spacetime moves through the ocean carving a canyon and drawing with the sun. Shifting tides remind us that even the ocean travels on the surface of the planet to an astonishing degree each day. Such large movements by the elements themselves stand as clear evidence of the possibility of movement in our own lives and societies, even when the adversity we face seems too large to overcome. This work was created with moving robots and long-exposure time-lapse photography on a pier in Venice Beach, California. No VFX. 4000x3000

Tidal Change

12 hours driving through the night dodging kangaroos and dealing with fatigue is all a part of the adventure - though driving through the night on West Australian roads is not recommended.

We arrived at our destination at 3 am, rolled out the swag for 2 hours sleep and awoke to a raging ocean. This was one of the most productive days I have had in the ocean. 10 hours later my brain was faded.

Some seek to experience life’s special moments in isolation, yet I’ve grown to appreciate the power of collective happiness. When you look to your side and another is fully captivated, united in the same enjoyment as you. There’s few occurrences which posses the ability to send an emotional wave cascading through all it touches. 

People venture to Yosemite National Park for many different reasons. I first came as a young kid, naive to the grandeur I was soon to experience. The canyon walls stretched higher than I’d ever imagined. It was the first National Park I ever visited, and the one I’d return to years later with a camera in hand eager to share its impact. I’ve spent my entire career trying to find ways to bring that beauty to life.

It’s challenging to put to words the magic of Firefall. Each year, there’s a short period when Horsetail Fall in the park comes alive with a glow that resembles lava flowing off the face of El Capitan. You need a few factors in your favor. Warm temperatures to result in melting snowfall. Clear skies are a must, as you need the last sunlight to illuminate the waterfall. Wind brings life to the mist and helps the neon glow come alive. On this night, all three perfectly aligned.

In the moment, I looked around. Young and old, photographer or not, all stood in sheer awe. The energy in the valley was as electric as the falls. Sometimes it's nice to find solitude, but some moments feel like they're designed to be enjoyed together. This one was well worth the adventure and I'm thankful I had a camera in hand to share the experience.
